The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest cricketing fixture around the world each year, and we’re back now for the much0awaited IPL 2025 season. This time, we saw record-breaking IPL contracts going to Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, both moving to new teams, as captains of the new teams as well. A lot of such transfers happened during the IPL 2025 mega auction.
The biggest change was that of Shreyas Iyer who led Kolkata Knight Riders to their first IPL title in ten years, only to see him being traded away to Punjab Kings, and being announced their captain in style, with a Bigg Boss collaboration. Teams like Rajasthan, Chennai, Mumbai, Gujarat, and Hyderabad went with their same captains from IPL 2024.

Punjab was one of the first teams to announce their new captains, while Rishabh Pant was announced captain of Lucknow Super Giants. KL Rahul made the move to Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025 and it’s expected that he will also lead the side, while Faf du Plessis and Axar Patel are also contenders to be named captain in IPL 2025. One of the biggest announcements of the year was the RCB captain for IPL 2025. Every year, there’s hope among RCB fans that Virat Kohli will be reinstated as captain, but it’s not to be. This time, they put their faith in one of their retained, up and coming talents in Rajat Patidar, who has the chance to change RCB fortunes and lead them to their first title.

One last announcement is pending from Kolkata Knight Riders, and we’ll update this IPL 2025 captains list in real-time when it’s announced. There’s the veteran Ajinkya Rahane who may be a contender, while looking towards the future may mean handing over the reins to all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who helped them over the line in the IPL 2025 final.

Team India captain Rohit Sharma no longer leads Mumbai Indians, which is being led by Hardik Pandya. As of now, Pat Cummins is the only overseas captain, who led SRH to the IPL 2024 final where they lost to KKR. Cummins pulled out of the Champions Trophy for Australia due to injury and SRH will have problems of their own is Cummins is not ready for the IPL 2025 season, with them then being tasked with hiring a new leader.
