It was in April 2016 that MMA superstar Conor McGregor first announced his retirement to the world. Since then, he did it again in 2019 and now, he chose this first Sunday of June 2020 to do it again. Now news channels across the world aren’t making much of a deal about it because, it’s like the boy who cried wolf now.
However, third time could indeed be the charm for McGregor, the Irish professional mixed martial artist and boxer. The 31-year old is a former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion and one could argue that’s it’s too young for him to be retiring from professional sports. However, there’s seems to not be much that he hasn’t achieved in his field.
McGregor (22-4) hadn’t won a mixed martial arts or boxing match since 2016 and that could be one of the reasons he’s so keen on calling it quits. Known as ‘The Notorious’, he may have plenty of doors opening for him after this announcement. In fact, it was only a week ago that former wrestler Triple H announced his intentions of signing McGregor in the WWE. Could that be the real reason?!
He posted a picture of himself with his mother to Twitter, to announce his retirement, with caption, “Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my World title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours ❤️”

McGregor has always been a showman and since the pandemic, there have been no fights and no crowds, which could’ve probably dampened his spirits as a fighter too. Over the years, he has been UFC’s brightest spark and biggest financial magnet as well, and they will surely miss him if this was indeed him signing off from the sport.
