Was Ben Stokes’ Outburst Right on Not Accepting The Draw Offer?

The 2025 India tour of England has been a brilliant one so far, with a lot of good contributions for both sides, plenty of individual accomplishments, tight finishes, verbal spats, and much more. Today was the final day of the 4th Test and India came in as underdogs, likely to lose the Test and got 1-3 down. However, there was a brilliant fight from the Indian batters.

Captain Shubman Gill came out to bat when India was at 0/2 and he went on to bring up his 4th century of the series from there. Later, there was a stubborn partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, the duo ensuring that India took on the lead and eventually drove the side to securing a draw and keeping the scoreline 1-2.

Was Ben Stokes' Outburst Right on Not Accepting The Draw Offer?

Ben Stokes outbreak at 4th Test

While it was a game of great twists and turns, it ended on a bit of a sour note in the final session. Here, England captain Ben Stokes walked over to the umpires and the two Indian batsmen, holding out his hand in a gesture of shaking on the game and offering a draw, before the final 15 overs of the Test.

At the time, the Indian team management decided not to take up the offer, as both batsmen were in their eighties. For Jadeja, a 5th Test century was in sight, while a maiden Test century awaited Sundar. And when they rejected the offer to wrap up the game early, there were a lot of words said between the two teams, which turned a bit ugly too.

It started with Stokes getting frustrated that the Indians wanted to keep batting even though it was a dead rubber. From there, his teammates came into the limelight as well, all of them heckling the two Indian batters too. Stokes was probably right in his part because the game was headed towards a draw, and it didn’t make sense risking the frontline bowlers for that period.

Ben Duckett and Harry Brook decided to take on Jadeja, making fun of the fact that he’s batting for milestones, and not to win. Also, they said it won’t be as special when he scores a century against part-time bowlers like Joe Root and Harry Brook. Our verdict? We think both teams were right in their respective places, and it just got heated as a result of 5 days of great fight from both sides.

The English cricketing mentality is one which doesn’t take individual milestones into consideration. However, they have to understand that it was a choice, and India chose to say NO. Additionally, Harry Brook coming in and throwing up flighted, lollipops to Jadeja while bowling, was outright pathetic in the spirit of the game.

Later however, both batsmen got to their milestones and then, they were quick to shake hands with the English side and walk off the ground. Then too, Stokes refused to shake their hands; maybe the frustration of not winning that game came out there towards the end.
