Launched all the way back in 1950 by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), this tournament was initially called the FIBA World Championship. Played by men’s senior national basketball teams from various countries across the world, the quadrennial competition was renamed to the FIBA Basketball World Cup from the 2010 FIBA World Cup onwards.
With 32 teams participating in this event every 4 years, the format is very similar to that of the FIFA World Cup. The winning country of every edition is awarded with the Naismith Trophy, which was first awarded in the 1967 edition. Over time, there have been multiple successful Basketball World Cups with the 2023 FIBA World Cup being the nineteenth edition of the tournament…
Ever since inception, there have been 18 completed editions and two teams have dominated this competition. These include United States of America and Yugoslavia who have won 5 (five) titles each, while the last FIBA World Cup in 2019 was won by Spain, which was their second title in this competition. From 1950 to 1974, no playoffs or finals were played; the team with the best round-robin record were crowned as FIBA World Cup champions!

USA’s win of 137–91 against Russia in the 1994 FIBA World Cup final set multiple records including the highest points in a single final in the history of the tournament. Additionally, they set the record for the biggest win in a FIBA World Cup final beating Russia by as many as 46 points at the SkyDome in Toronto, Canada. They became one of the most impactful FIBA champions of all time.
USA’s success in this tournament is tremendous as apart from their 8 finals appearances, they’ve made another 6 appearances in the third place games, finishing third on four occasions and fourth on another couple of occasions. Beginning from 10 teams participating in the first edition, the FIBA World Cup grew to 32 teams from the 2019 edition onwards, and we only think it’ll get bigger and better going forward.
