It’s been a fabulous fortnight at the Melbourne Park where the Australian Open 2025 has just come to an end. Yesterday, we saw Madison Keys beat Aryna Sabalenka in the women’s singles finals. Today, it was world number #1 Jannik Sinner who emerged victorious in the men’s singles final, beating world number #2, Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
Sinner was unbeatable on the day and lost only 2 sets in the entire tournament. Zverev didn’t stand a chance and the third set spiralled out of his control real quick. With this, Zverev entered a special club of men’s singles players who have been in three grand slam titles but have never lifted the silverware yet.
Alexander Zverev loses third grand slam final
The first time he made a grand slam final was way back at the US Open 2020 where he was two sets up against Dominic Thiem. However, the Austrian Thiem made an incredible comeback from two sets down to win his first and only grand slam title. Post that, Zverev then made the French Open 2024 final, which he lost again.

Here, he was pitted against Carlos Alcaraz and once again, he was leading 2-1 before he went on to lose the final two sets against the Spaniard. Today however, was different because he wasn’t able to take a single set off the Italian, Sinner. He got close in the second set where he lost in the tie-breaker, but apart from that, Sinner dominated from start to end.

In fact, Zverev wasn’t able to get a single break point right through the match. With that, he joins only 6 others men’s players in the history of the game to make three grand slam titles without any success; not the record he would’ve wanted to achieve. Here’s a list of the players to be 0-3 in grand slam finals:
- Bunny Austin
- Harry Hopman
- Frank Hunter
- Frank Riseley
- Casper Ruud
- Eric Sturgess
- Alexander Zverev
Beautiful moment between Sinner and Zverev after the Australian Open final.
Zverev has lost 3 Grand Slam finals… it’s painful to come that close but fall just short.
Jannik puts his arms on his shoulders and consoles him.
All class.

From this list, Casper Ruud is the only other player who is still active, and there’s still hope for both of these top ten players. They’ve still got many years on them and remember, it took the likes of Dominic Thiem and Andy Murray the fourth final before they became grand slam champions as well. No hope should be lost!
Zverev has had a history of not being able to close out the title because apart from 3 finals, he’s also made 6 other semi finals in grand slams. As for Sinner, he’s got a 3-0 grand slam record, winning all the three finals that he’s made so far. This includes another Australian Open title from 2024, and the US Open 2024 title too.
Wow! As Zverev starts to speak, someone in the crowd shouts:

Zverev can easily win a Grand slam.
He just needs to work on his Forehand, Backhand, Serve, Volley, Mentality, Second serve, Fitness, Movement, personality and ability to handle pressure. pic.twitter.com/hlWSg93H4d

And to make matters worse for Zverev, there was an outburst from someone in the crowd, talking about his allegations of sexual assault. Not the best outing for him, but we hope he comes back stronger for the French Open 2025 which begins in May 2025.
