Quite a few changes are being made in the Indian online gaming and gambling industry of late. And one of the biggest updates of all was the fact that a leading sports betting company decided to pull out from the Indian market, while continuing to operate from the rest of the world. We’re talking about sports betting giant Betway.com who withdrew from India before the start of October 2023.
“Dear Betway customers. We regrettably have elected to cease trading in your region. We will work with you to return any outstanding balances. If you have an account you would like to discuss please contact us at enquiries@betway.com and include your username,” is the message available on the Betway India homepage, with no other official reason as to why they’ve made this crucial decision.

This comes at the same time that the Indian government decided to impose a 28% GST taxation on online game, which was coming into effect ton 1st October 2023. Our only guess is that they’ve withdrawn from India because of this new tax rule, adding to a list of other brands who ceased operations in India including Betfair, Bet365, WinDaddy, ComeOn Sports, and others.
Unfortunately, this announcement came less than a week before the ICC World Cup 2023, which is set to see record volumes of sports betting taking place.
