It’s a bad Sunday for those in Philippines as reports came in of a military plane crashing in their Sulu province on Sunday, 4th July 2021. As per early reports from the venue of the incident, at least 17 are feared dead while 40 were rescued from the burning wreckage. While we’re not sure of the exact numbers, this is not the kind of news you want to wake up to.
The Philippines air force C-130 aircraft was carrying military troops when it was said to have missed the runway and caused this mishap a few hours back. At least 17 military personnel were killed while many others fortunately rescued, but of course severely injured. The crash is said to have happened just before noon at Bangkal village in the mountainous town of Patikul.
Chief of Staff, General Cirilito Sobejana has confirmed the incident but we’re not sure what the immediate cause of the crash was. “It’s very unfortunate. The plane missed the runway and it was trying to regain power but failed and crashed,” Sobejana said in a statement to reporters. At least 40 were brought to a nearby hospital and efforts to save them are underway.

While it has been rainy weather in Central Philippines, we’re not too sure if the weather was bad in Sulu province, so we’ll avoid speculating the cause as of now. Troops have been battling the Abu Sayyaf group in that region for years now and that’s the reason for the military trips to this region.
Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told the press that rescue efforts are ongoing as we type this. He also confirmed that the aircraft had a total of 92 people onboard, which includes 3 pilots, 5 crew and the rest being army personnel. The Lockheed C-130 Hercules was an ex-US Air Force aircraft that was gifted to Philippines as military assistance earlier this year.
