Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is a self-proclaimed and self-styled spiritual guru (or god-man, as some would say). His fate was to be decided today (Monday) when a Rohtak court was to deliver the verdict of a 15-year old rape case that Ram Rahim Singh was accused of.
A few minutes back, the verdict was delivered by Justice Jagdeep Singh, who was flown in to Rohtak in a helicopter only for this job. Both sides were allowed a defence of 10 minutes in the courtroom where Ram Rahim’s team pleaded for a reduced jail term, mentioning poor health and a lot of social work done by the guru.
The verdict – 10 years imprisonment.
The spiritual man was dressed in white in the courtroom and was reportedly very quiet throughout the proceedings. However, he is said to have broken down as the sentence was being read out aloud. There is high security in the Rohtak jail and the surrounding areas to prevent any possible ‘incidents’.
Ram Rahim was convicted on Friday, after which his followers went on a rampage and riots were caused, wherein 38 people were killed and over 200 left injured. Shoot at sight orders are now set in place (Section 144 of the CrPC – unlawful assembly) if anyone tries to fire at police, or break the curfew.
The case was first brought to notice in 2002 where the author of an anonymous letter to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee accused Rahim of repeatedly raping her. Over the years, Rahim has become a music producer, singer, actor and filmmaker.
