Today, we had two semi finals lined up in the 2021/22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and in the first one, we saw a good bowling performance from Tamil Nadu’s Saravana Kumar who picked 5/21 as his state progressed to become the first finalist of the tournament. In the second semi final, we had Karnataka vs Vidarbha and we saw yet another good bowling performance in this so-called batsman’s game!
It was Vidarbha’s Darshan Nalkande who pulled things back in the final over of the game, restricting Karnataka to 176/6 and giving his batsmen a chance to chase it down. It looked like they were set to post 190+ but Nalkande bowled a fabulous final over which read 0 W W W W 1! Yes, we actually gave just one run in the final over and picked four wickets in four consecutive balls.

With the wickets of Aniruddha Joshi, Sharath BR and Jagadeesha Suchith off 19.2, 19.3 and 19.4, Nalkande picked up a hat-trick against the run of play. However, the big hitting batsman Abhinav Manohar finally got the strike on the fifth ball of the over and instead of depositing one into the stands, he also lobbed the ball up into the air, allowing Nalkande to pick up a double hattrick.
Nalkande had no wickets in the game prior to what he got in the final over and ended the day with figures of 4/28. Karnataka are still favourites to win this semi final but with the momentum Vidarbha got, the game is surely on. The 23-year old became the second to get a hat-trick in SMAT 2021/22 after R Sai Kishore, and the second to get four wickets in 4 balls in the tournament, after Abhimanyu Mithun in 2019!
