BBL 11 – Heat vs Sixers Clash Called Off!

It hasn’t bee the best starts to the New Year 2022 for Australia and the Big Bash League (BBL). Positive cases of Covid-19 are quickly spreading all across the country and its affecting their sporting leagues as well. It was only yesterday that we spoke about a BBL 11 schedule rejig because of rising coronavirus cases in the BBL, especially in the Brisbane Heat camp.

Cricket Australia was left with no choice but to postpone the game as the entire squad was waiting for their test results. It was supposed to be Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers on 4 Jan 2022 but it as later postponed to 5 Jan 2022. However, on this morning, it was realised that Heat will not be able to field a team and thus, the game has eventually been called off.

BBL 11 - Heat vs Sixers Clash Called Off!

Heat vs Sixers match called off

It’s the first game in the BBL 11 fixtures that has been called off and now, this is a major threat to the rest of the BBL 2021/22 season. We saw PSL and IPL being cancelled earlier last year and Cricket Australia is doing all they can to avoid the same fate here. Melbourne Stars already had two consecutive losses after fielding a completely fresh team thanks to Covid-19, and Heat may well see the same fate soon.

12 players and 1 coach received positive PCR tests this afternoon, which has led to today’s game at the Gold Coast to be ‘postponed’. Brisbane Heat posted on Twitter saying they will have a team ready for tomorrow, saying, “We remain confident we will field a 13-man squad for tomorrow night in Geelong, with Fakhar Zaman & Melbourne-based replacement players eligible & available.”

KFC Big Bash League is yet to announce a new date for this match but the troubles are rising in the tournament. Heat were unable to field 13 players for this match but they’ll now have to dig into their reserves to get a team on the field. It’s unfortunate but this is what it’s come to, with Covid-19 causing a massive disruption not just in Australia, but around the world.

Brisbane Heat new team post Covid-19

Fakhar Zaman will be one of the highlight names in the post Covid-19 squad and we don’t know which other players returned negative tests. However, like we saw with the Stars, we’re going to see a lot of FC cricketers and other domestic cricketers being a part of the team. Clearly, a loss or two are on their way for the Heat in BBL 2021/22.

“I know it is disappointing for the players, coaches and staff that were all supportive of trying to stage the game as normal. The fans and supporters will be equally saddened that the squad has been affected in this manner and that tonight’s game can’t take place,” said Queensland Cricket CEO, Terry Svenson.
