Michelle Obama Reveals 20 Years Old Miscarriage

Former First Lady and former US President Barack Obama’s wife Michelle Obama has got herself in the news of late for a couple of reasons, thanks to the release of her new book titled ‘Becoming‘ by Michelle Obama. The memoir mentions a few secrets that were kept for quite a few years, including that of a miscarriage twenty years ago, because of which she felt ‘lost and alone’.

She spoke about that painful time many years ago, saying that the miscarriage was a tough time not just for her, but for her husband as well. The duo had to attend couple’s therapy and they even ended up using IVF (In vitro fertilisation) to conceive both their daughters, Malia and Sasha, aged 20 and 17 respectively now.

The 426-page book is all set to be released on Tuesday, following which Michelle Obama will tour 10 different cities including London for the book launch. Mrs Obama is a former lawyer and hospital administrator and she spoke to ABC about the miscarriage, saying, “I felt like I failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were because we don’t talk about them. We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken. It’s important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen.”

Difficult times through marriage

She said that she was around 34 years old when she realized that the biological clock is real and that egg production is indeed limited. She also revealed the fact that the couple’s marriage went through tough stages (as most marriages do), with Barack joining politics and Michelle having to administer the IVF shots herself.

“Marriage counselling for us was one of those ways where we learned how to talk out our differences. I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there’s something wrong with them. And I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and who love each other, we work on our marriage,” she said.

Apart from her marriage and infertility, Michelle Obama also spoke about the fact that she would ‘never forgive’ the current US President, Donald Trump, for bringing up the ‘birther theory’ about her husband Barack and that he wasn’t born in the US.
