With the tensions rising at the LAC (Line of Actual Control), the Indian government has gone on to ban 59 apps from the play store, the biggest of which is TikTok. The tensions are simmering at the Indo-China border and the government believes that banning these Chinese apps is the right way forward.
The ban extends to mobile applications as well as browser usage, and the entire list of 59 apps has also been published. TikTok had to be the biggest of them all because over the last year or two, this has gone on to become a sensation in India. In fact, many youngsters have looked towards TikTok as a money-making route or even a profession!
This isn’t the first time TikTok has been banned in India and while the first time saw a lot of protests against the ruling, this time Indians are looking at taking this seriously. The move has been made to safeguard the safety, security and interests of Indian internet users, thus protecting the Indian cyberspace altogether.

“The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order,” said the Government press release.
TikTok crossed the 2-billion user mark recently. The video app was among the top 5 apps in India until the tensions began between India and China last month, soon falling to number #10 on this list. We’re expecting its popularity to take a further hit in the weeks to come. Apart from Tiktok, WeChat, ShareIt, Shein, UC Browser and other popular apps have also been banned!
