You’d expect coronavirus to be the topic of discussion but we find USA President Donald Trump in the middle of the action at all times. He’s in the news every second day and now, he’s in the headline again for his bank details being revealed to the entire world in a live press conference that took place yesterday.
On Friday, Trump’s press secretary Kayleigh McEnany wanted to give him some positive PR and she announced that the President would be donating his quarterly pay cheque to the Department of Health and Human Services. This decision was made to ‘support the efforts being undertaken to confront, contain and combat the coronavirus’.
However, when she lifted the cheque up to show reporters present in the room, it came along with Trump’s complete banking and personal account details, which led to a media frenzy. The focus of the media went less towards the fact that Trump would be donating his salary but towards towards the act that mock cheques were not being used in the media briefing.
“Today his salary went to help advance new therapies to treat this virus, but leave it to the media to find a shameful reason not to simply report the facts, focusing instead on whether the check is real or not,” said a statement from the White House later. However, the White House should also know that such sensitive details going out on television increases the risks of being hacked.
“They’re not only a nice prop onstage, but they also omit the sensitive account information that normally appears at the bottom. The rest of us should play it safe and keep our account numbers to ourselves,” said Mike Chapple, an IT professor at the University of Notre Dame. It’s not for no reason that sportsmen get large mock cheques when being presented to them on TV!
