Coimbatore Among 1,018 Places to Get Change of Name

In 2018, the Tamil Nadu state government had told the Assembly that they will be making name changes to their cities and towns, to bring the anglicized names as close to their pronunciations in Tamil as possible. Tough they idea has been floating around since then, the official changes have finally been made.

An order regarding the same was issued on 1st April 2020 but was made public only yesterday, 10th June when the state government announced the change of names of all 1,018 cities and towns in the state. They did so through a 37-page notification to match the local language pronunciations to their English spellings.

Ever since I’ve been little, I’ve known of Coimbatore but from today, I’ll now have to address it as ‘Koyampuththoor’. Similarly, Ambattur has been christened as ‘Ambaththoor’. Another Tier II city called Vellore has been given a new name in ‘Veeloor’. Mylapore will now be written in English as ‘Mayilaappoor’ while Egmore station will be called ‘Ezhumboor station’.

It’s quite a lot to take in but the Tamil Nadu government really seems to have gone all out on this one. Not sure how this took priority during a time when the country is suffering from the coronavirus pandemic, but it sure gives us some other news to read. A high-level committee was responsible for making these changes including K Pandiarajan, Minister for Tamil Official Language and Culture.
