IT will haunt you. IT will make you float!
Stephen King is rightly described as the ‘King of Horror’. His stories transcend you into another world, another dimension or dimensions, I should say. He never writes about ghosts but he will haunt you psychologically, hunt you down and make you face that horror through his books.
After the debacle of his latest adaptation ‘The Dark Tower’, comes another of his classics ‘IT’ – directed by Andy Muschietti of the acclaimed Mama fame and a compelling soundtrack by Benjamin Wallfisch (A Cure for Wellness, Hidden Figures, Lights Out).
The movie starts off with a 7-year old kid George playing with a paper boat in the rain and damn, he meets the clown. Georgie’s death sets up the events that take place in the next summer. Bill Skarsgard as IT/The Pennywise Dancing Clown (the shape shifting dark entity) has done a fantastic job. I only wish he had more screen time in terms of dialogues. His character is creepy and indeed, scary.
Jaeden Lieberher as Bill, George’s elder brother is exceptional and a standout amongst the kid actors. The stammering kid provides the emotional touch to a horror movie. Believing his brother is still alive, he motivates his entire group of friends known as ‘The Losers’.
Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Finn Wolfhard as Ritchie, Jack Dylan as Eddie, and Chosen Jacobs as Mike have all done a great job. Somehow these characters remind me of the kids from the movie Super 8, a bunch of kids going after a monster to save their friends. All these kids are faced with their worst fears, a fear that The Clown feeds on. Everybody has their demons and their first encounter with The Clown is quite haunting and these are some of the best scenes from the movie.
Although I feel the purists won’t be satisfied with the scares from the movie but as a coming of age thriller, I think it’s quite good. Watch it for Pennyswise and the bunch of Losers.
