There’s not a single soul in this country who doesn’t like entertainment and drama, and what better form of consuming such entertainment that reality television shows. Debuting in India in 2006/07, Bigg Boss took the country by storm, which was an inspiration from the Dutch reality TV show called Big Brother. Since then, it’s become a household name in India.
The highest viewed show in the country is Bigg Boss Hindi and after the success of this show, we saw many other regional languages creating their own series including Bigg Boss Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Bangla, and Marathi. Being India’s most favourite reality series, today we’re going to take you down memory lane and talk about past Bigg Boss winners.
Bigg Boss 2006/07 was the first edition of this TV show in India and it began with an 86-day series where housemates lived in a televised house in Lonavala (Maharashtra, India), surviving each week with public votes from across the country. Since then, the show has taken many new twists and turns and formats, even having a record 141-day season in Bigg Boss 14.

Even the number of housemates has kept changing. While the first few seasons had only 15 members within the house, we’ve seen as many as 24 participants in a single Bigg Boss season, this highest number being recorded in the latest Bigg Boss 15 season. While many big Bollywood celebrities have hosted Bigg Boss Hindi over the years including Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Farah Khan, and others, none of these Bigg Boss hosts have been more loved and appreciated than Salman Khan. It’s often believed that the candidates he prefers through a season often goes on to win that respective season as well.

Indian actor, model, and producer Rahul Roy was the first ever Bigg Boss winner in India, taking home the massive top prize of ₹1 Crore. Since then, the prize money has dropped but the weekly salaries have increased and the length of each season is also much longer now. Over the years, celebrities from many walks of have participated in the show, including a number of international celebrities.
The Indian ‘bahu’ aka those who have been leading actresses in Hindi daily soaps, have had the highest success in Bigg Boss over the years. Because those serials have such high viewership, the most Bigg Boss winners have been such TV series actresses, with four of them winning in successive years between Bigg Boss Season 4 to 8 – Shweta Tiwari, Juhi Parmar, Urvashi Dholakia, and Gauahar Khan.
