The city was complaining of a shortage of rain this monsoons but Mumbai has now got its rain, but probably got much more than it was expecting. The rains over the past few days in Mumbai is what weather officials are marking as the heaviest and longest rains in the city since the 2005 floods.
On July 26th, 12 years ago, Mumbai was brought to a standstill and the city was devastated due to floods. 125 mm or 5 inches of rain is what was recorded until today afternoon (29th August), and this is around 9 or 10 times more than the average rainfall.
These last few days of rain have caused complete havoc around the city once again and it’s only expected to get worse. At 4:40pm today, a high tide (3.2 metres) was expected to hit Mumbai. Due tot his, traffic on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has been shut off for the time being.
The Meteorological Department has predicted even more heavy rainfall over the next 24-48 hours, which means that most schools/colleges, offices, and other institutions in the city may be shut tomorrow. However, getting back home today is an issue. Trains from Churchgate to Dadar have been shut down at the moment.
Here’s what you can do to stay safe during this period:
- Go home, if at work. Travelling will be difficult but it could probably get worse in the next day or two.
- Stay indoors, as far as possible.
- Abandon your cars if water reaches tyre-level.
- Contact single emergency number (112) or contact Mumbai police’s Twitter handle if assistance is required.
- Avoid today’s Ganpati idols immersion. Police have asked citizens to stay away from waterfronts.
