Even if you haven’t heard of this name, you surely can’t forget this face. We’re talking about Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, founder of popular Indian spices company, MDH (Mahashian di Hatti). He’s been the face of the company for decades now, known for his popular red turban and pearl necklace look.
You’ve seen him on packets of MDH spices and you’ve definitely heard him singing along on their TV advertisements as well. However, today marks a sad day for his family and for the MDH company as a whole as their owner passed away after weeks of illness, a few months before he could turn 98 years old.
As per reports, he was in a hospital in Delhi for weeks before passing away this morning of a cardiac arrest. Born on 27 March 1923 in Sialkot (now Pakistan), Gulati opened his first store in Karol Bagh in Delhi and since then, it was a story to admire. The 97-year old was in fact awarded with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, last year.

Many people in the business industry marked their mourning on social media with tweets and other posts for Gulati, including Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia. In case you still haven’t recognized the person we’re talking about, you’ll remember the ad jingle, “Asli Masale Sach Sach, MDH, MDH.”
After dropping out in fifth grade, Gulati joined his father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati’s spice business early in life and from there, he created one of the most inspiring entrepreneurial stories in India. We send out condolences to the family and the company and wish that he rests in peace. For more updates on MDH Masala and other business stories in India, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com…!
