One of the most iconic names in Indian cinema, Dilip Kumar was hospitalised last week after complaints of chest pain and breathlessness. There was prolonged illness and the actor was also bedridden for over a month now, and was admitted to Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai recently. Despite all efforts, the doctors couldn’t save him and Kumar passed away this morning, Wednesday, 7th July 2021.
Known as the Tragedy King of Bollywood, Kumar suffered from prostate cancer for a long time now and this had spread to other organs of his body as well. Dr. Jalil Parkar spoke to reporters and confirmed the news of his death from prolonged illness, passing away at 7:30am this morning at the age of 98 years.
“He had water in pleural cavity, and he suffered a kidney failure. He required blood transfusion multiple times. We carried the last transfusion but it did not help. The fluids accumulated in pleural cavity had to be removed several times. The cancer spread made it difficult to treat him,” another hospital doctor was quoted saying.

The news was also confirmed by the Dilip Kumar official Twitter account, by Faisal Farooqui. “With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return. – Faisal Farooqui,” read the tweet which has seen countless replies of grief and condolence messages.
Born by the name Yusuf Khan, Dilip Kumar was highly regarded for his acting style and was often referred to as the best Bollywood actor till date. He starred in Andaz, Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Ram Aur Shyam, Naya Daur, Gunga Jamuna, Shakti, Mashaal and many more films that brought his fame over a career spanning 5+ decades.
After first having won the Filmfare award for Best Actor in 1954, he went on to win this award 8 times over the years and holds the record jointly with Shah Rukh Khan for having won it the most number of times. Kumar also owns the Guinness World Records for most number of total awards for an Indian actor.
