Digital is the way forward now, as streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Zee5 and others have taken over. Netflix obviously is an industry leader globally and they’ve been struggling to add new titles to their range of movies and TV shows because there hasn’t been a lot of shooting taking place because of the lockdown.
However, they released a new title called ‘Bulbbul‘ yesterday, 24th June and social media is talking about this film already. Less than 24 hours since being launched on Netflix, lakhs of people have already watched the movie which was the directorial debut for Anvita Dutt and Anushka Sharma was the producer, also new to filmmaking.
For a film being produced by a couple of newbies, it was a fabulous attempt. For starters, we’re happy with the film’s cast, though none were really known actors. Tripti Dimri did well as the protagonist and we’re sure to see her again on digital platforms. However, the film had its fair share of flaws.
Firstly, we’re unsure of whether the makers were looking at creating a suspense-horror film or whether they were aiming at creating a movie in support of feminism. There were bits and pieces of both but nothing was really ‘scary’ in the film and honestly, killing people may not always be the right way to portray feminism.

The fairy-tale could’ve done better in terms of colours being used. We understand that it was a dark film but the constant use of pink shades across the movie was a clear downer. Dutt, who has worked in big Bollywood titles as a lyricist and dialogue writer said she has also been a fan of dark cinema, which she tried to portray here as well.
The pros were definitely a good cast, good language and architecture considering is was an early 20th Century depiction in Calcutta (now Kolkata), and paintings and windows of that era too. The cons will definitely be that this was a letdown after Anushka Sharma’s ‘Paatal Lok’. Maybe it was the high level of expectations or it was just the fact that the script for Bulbbul was a bit on the weaker side.
#Bulbbul is the kind of Feminist film I was looking out for since some time. Albeit predictable fable-horror, It questions the evils of child marriage, gender violence &everything patriarchy. What wins here is a finale act that makes you wish if it were not just a film but reality pic.twitter.com/ZmovL5Ld8h

Feminism is not about hating Men.
It's is all about equality.
It's about the subtle portrayal of how badass women truly are.
And that's where #Bulbbul scores high.#TriptiDimri completely stole the show and was the life and heart of the film💙

Overall, the film is good as a one-time watch but not something you will remember for too long. Tripti Dimri however has won the hearts of viewers across India fr her standout performance. Once again, Bollywood failed to create a proper ‘horror’ film but we’re sure the attempts will go on.
