We woke up this morning to find news that really took us by storm as Peshawar Zalmi’s owner is reportedly in the race to become owner of one of the largest football franchise clubs across the world. For those who don’t know, Zalmi is a franchise team that plays in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which in comparison is a very tiny competition as compared to the English Premier League (EPL).
And the owner of Zalmi is looking at picking up a fractional ownership stake in leading EPL franchise, Chelsea Football Club. This comes after the current owner decided to sell his stake in the club. The owner is Roman Abramovich and it’s been like that since as far as we can remember but with the tension taking place between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian will sell his stake and the proceeds will go towards relief operations in Ukraine.
Javed Afridi to buy Chelsea FC?
The Zalmi owner came into the limelight after a Spanish publication called Soy Madridista said that the Pakistani billionaire is looking at picking up a stake in the team. We saw a further report in the Khaleej Times which mentions that the minimum stake to get into the running is INR 30,400 Crore, which means it’s likely he gets a fractional stake in the English football club.
Given the rich history of the team, the move will not only be a boost to the Zalmi owner Javed Afridi but it will boost the popularity of his PSL franchise, the overall PSL league and overall sports development in the country of Pakistan. Reports further suggest that a bunch of investors are interested in the opportunity, and Afridi’s team is in talks with the relevant people in UK since yesterday.

“Afridi’s team held a meeting this afternoon (Wednesday) with a sports and legal agency in the UK. There’s a bunch of investors who are interested in Chelsea Football Club. They believe it’s the right time and opportunity to invest in football. And someone from Asia should come and invest. They are in negotiation with them right now,” said a source to Khaleej Times.
Roman Abramovich to sell Chelsea
After having stepped up as Chelsea owner way back in 2003, reports suggest that there was a lot of pressure on the Russian billionaire and oligarch because of the Russian invasion. And we believe he’s made the right choice now to step down and sell his place in the team. Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss is also believed to have received an offer from Abramovich and will give Afridi stiff competition.
Who is Javed Afridi?
He’s only 36 years old and is one of the most known Pakistani executives, entrepreneurs and billionaires. Most known for being CEO of Haier Pakistan and owner of MG JW Automobile Pakistan, he’s also co-founder of a few companies and owner of Peshawar Zalmi. He’s clearly keen on increasing his portfolio in the sporting industry too!
