It’s Day 3 of the ICC 2019 World Cup and the first double-header of the tournament. We have an interesting match-up for the first game of the day with New Zealand playing Sri Lanka. While the former is the obvious favourite, I wouldn’t take a team like Sri Lanka lying low, as they have always had consistent results in the Cricket World Cup. Expect an exciting game of cricket if the Sri Lankans can weather the Boult-storm upfront.
Swinging conditions mean New Zealand have the upper hand with a good armoury of bowlers but Sri Lanka also have a couple of their own. They’ve had tough times of late but these are teams you should beware of. A few surprises can be expected as they seem to be gelling well under their new captain. New Zealand
First things first. New Zealand will be looking for the ideal opening partner for Martin Guptill. Gutpill looked good in his 3 games at IPL 2019 so I’ll pick him in my team. Henry Nicholls looked very scratchy for his 15 in the warm-up as opener, and I don’t see him opening again. Kiwis have the choice of sending an explosive option in Colin Munro up top while my suggestion would be the more composed Tom Latham.
Tom Latham appeared at the last training and is set to feature today after recovering from injury. With pacers are set to do well, Trent Boult is a must-have in your team. However, Southee can be skipped as he picked 1/115 in three games at IPL 2019 and just managed a single scalp against India. Matt Henry is a less popular option and he could be your x-factor player. Also pick Kane Williamson, who has 3 fifties in 4 games here.
Sri Lanka
Again, there are opening dilemmas here. Who opens with new captain Dimuth Karunaratne? A couple of fifties in 3 warm-ups leading up to the CWC 2019 means he’s in good touch. With him, SL has the option of sending Lahiru Thirimanne up the order, but I’d rather prefer the explosive Kusal Perera at the top, to give some more strength in the middle order. Pick Kusal Mendis for sure, as he is Sri Lanka’s best bet with the bat.
Considering there are many left-arm batsmen in the NZ side, an off-spinner would do well but Sri Lanka lack one. Historically, spin has done well here so they should look at playing someone like Jeffrey Vandersay. However, it looks unlikely so pick Jeevan Mendis instead. Also make sure you have all-rounders Thisara Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva in your Rotobash (sign-up to get Rs.100 FREE) fantasy team.
