Every year, we keep asking the same question – Will MS Dhoni play another year in the Indian Premier League? Every year, Dhoni keeps surprising us by coming back for another season in yellow, for the Chennai Super Kings. We were almost sure though, that IPL 2024 would be his last, especially after all signs pointed towards that, including giving away the captaincy.
Dhoni and all his teammates avoided the question of whether MS Dhoni will play IPL 2025 or not. Now, CSK has been knocked out of the tournament by Royal Challengers Bangalore and once again, the same question has popped up. However, it’s his teammates this time, answering the question across social media, for global CSK fans in yellow.
Is Dhoni retiring from IPL?
The question was answered by Dhoni himself, putting up a cryptic post on his Facebook after CSK knockout in IPL 2024. He mentioned something about being back in IPL 2025 with a ‘new team’. Then, his teammates went on a spree to announce that he’ll be back, including Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who posted saying, “Master will be back 🦁7️⃣💛 Next year👊💯”
And right when Pathirana’s tweet was getting some attention on social media, the focus then moved to his New Zealand teammate, Daryl Mitchell. The Kiwi all-rounder also did something very similar, saying, “He will be back 7️⃣💛” in a tweet and then also reposting what Pathirana had to say. So, what’s really cooking with CSK players and Dhoni for IPL 2025?

Earlier in the week, on 20th May, Mitchell posted a photo with Dhoni, as the latter presented him a signed jersey as a memento. He posted the picture with caption, “Thank you my leader, Legend @msdhoni bhai 🐐💛💛🙏🏻” and now, there’s a whole buzz about Dhoni being back. But the question remains, will Dhoni really be back for IPL 2025?
He will be back 7️⃣💛
— Daryl Mitchell (@DarylMitchell75) May 23, 2024
Many times during his short stints in IPL 2024 for CSK, we saw Dhoni struggling with fitness. He was clearly not at his best, now 42-years old. And that’s why we were 99% sure that Dhoni would not be back for another season, especially with the mega auction coming up before IPL 2025. So, it’s possible these posts are talking about Dhoni being back but in a new role or avatar.
He could be back in IPL 2025 as CSK coach or mentor, or he could be back playing only as impact sub for the next season. He could be back as part-owner of CSK and could even be back with a fresh team of his own. The point is that it’s all unclear right now and these players are just building up some hype and having fun on social media ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
